Samsung Galaxy S4 announced: 5-inch 1080p display, 8-core Exynos and 13MP camera

The Radio Music Hall became host to Samsung’s unveiling of it’s next Galaxy smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Depending on how you look at things, the Galaxy S4 may feel like a speed increment rather than a true successor to the Galaxy S3 as for all intents and purposes, side by side the two look very similar.

On the upside, the Galaxy S4 does look a bit more polished and does come with upgraded specs that’ll make some Galaxy S3 users envious.

For the software-side, Samsung is still pushing through with it’s S-line of apps and “smart” features.

  • Smart Pause stops the video you’re watching if your eyes drift away
  • Smart Scroll will move the screen up or down when you tilt the phone and look at the screen at the same time
  • Air View allows you to preview information by hovering your finger above compatible apps similar to the Galaxy Note II’s version with the S-Pen
  • Group Play allows you to share music in surround-sound mode or play games against other GS4 devices nearby.

Unfortunately for pixel peepers, the Galaxy S4 still sports a Pentile display but with it’s 441 ppi AMOLED display you’ll have a hard time seeing these pixels.    The upside is that it’s now a 1080p display and with AMOLED, crisp (if but hypersaturated) colors abound.

The great camera found in the GS3 also receives an update increasing it’s pixel count to 13MP.  Samsung claims zero shutter lag with it’s new camera and touts the dual camera mode in which you can stitch together images from the front and rear camera so you won’t have to use the tired same excuse when asked why you weren’t in the shot.

Availability for the Galaxy S4 will depend on your country but Samsung says that shipments will be available as early as April.
